THIS MONTHS REVIEW SUBMITTED BY RICHARD MAHON, THANK YOU !! SOLO MATERIAL HIGHLIGHTS WATERS RELEASE In 1999 & 2000 Pink Floyd fans received an unexpected and pleasant surprise as band co-founder Roger Waters returned to the stage after 12 years away from the road. A charity concert at the Los Angeles Universal Amphitheater in 1992 rekindled Waters enthusiasm for touring. While planning to spend the summer of 1999 with his family on Long Island, Waters had his manager contact various promoters to see if there was interest for a tour. The 1999 and 2000 tours were very successful for Waters. "In The Flesh" is a document of the 2000 tour. Recorded in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Portland and Irvine, CA, the album's strong point is how it follows the set list exactly how it was played on the 2000 tour. Disk 1 begins with "In The Flesh," "The Happiest Days Of Our Lives" and "Another Brick In The Wall part 2." These initial songs don't come off well. The mix is a bit muddy which can often be the case when every member of a large band plays at the same time. The acoustic songs that follow, "Mother," "Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert" and "Southampton Dock," work very well as the songs are based around simple arrangements, specifically Waters with an acoustic guitar. Waters voice has noticeably improved from the 1990 release "The Wall-Live In Berlin." A full-length version of "Dogs" (from 1977's Animals) highlights the first set, which closes with three songs from the "Wish You Were Here" album. The second set begins with three songs from Pink Floyd's 1973 release "Dark Side Of The Moon" which spent an unprecedented 741 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. The set moves into the highlight of the show: Waters' solo material. An excellent version of "Every Strangers Eyes" is followed by four tracks from Waters' 1992 solo release "Amused To Death." A tour never materialized for that release so this was the first opportunity Waters had to perform these songs in concert. "Perfect Sense," "The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range," "It's A Miracle" and the title song "Amused To Death" rank alongside Waters' best work. "Brain Damage"/"Eclipse" from Dark Side Of The Moon precede the show closer - "Comfortably Numb" from The Wall. The show's encore is a brand new Roger Waters track titled "Each Small Candle." The song is further developed than when it was first performed a year ago at the conclusion of the 1999 tour. The song still seems like a work in progress. The lyrics are included in the centerfold of the CD art insert. Roger Waters is back, revitalized by these most recent tours to record and get back on the road performing in front of an audience who still remember his best work with Pink Floyd and what he's done since. For those who saw the shows in 1999 and 2000 this CD set makes an excellent keepsake of Waters' tours. For those who missed out, the CD provides an opportunity to hear what they missed.
